One of the soldiers tasked with guarding the Mexican Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was found dead late last week. The body of 20-year-old Jorge Mauricio Meléndez Herrera was discovered in Ciudad Juárez.
A forensic expert said that Meléndez died from a blow to the back of the head, but he was also found to have suffered multiple stab wounds. His body was identified after his family reported him missing.
Officials said the case was currently with authorities in Chihuahua state, where the jail is located, but could be passed on to federal investigators because of the victim’s job guarding Guzman.
Three hundred more troops have been sent to guard El Chapo’s prison since Herrera was found dead, according to UPI. Herrera guarded the outer perimeter of the prison’s multi-layered security forces keeping watch on the drug kingpin.
