Phil Knight The Richest Person In The Sports

That doesn’t come as much of a surprise given Nike’s prominence in the world of sports appeal, including its various shoe brands, led by the Jordan Brand, Because that the Nike co-founder and chairman Phil Knight has been named the richest man in sports according to Forbes.

The release noted an official decision is expected sometime in 2016. How his changing role could impact his net worth moving forward is unclear, but for now, he remains inside the top 25 in the world and the top earner in sports. He is placed in the “Fashion and Retail” category, but his work is very much centered in the sporting industry, making him the richest person involved with sports worldwide.

With his title as the richest person in the world is Bill Gates, valued with a net worth of $75 billion, despite losing $4.2 billion last year. He has been No. 1 one for 3 years in a row and topped the list 17 out of the last 22 years. Other notables persons include Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, who had the best year of all billionaires. The 31-year-old added $11.2 billion to his fortune and moved up to No. 6 from 16.

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos both make their first appearance in the top ten of FORBES’ annual ranking of the world’s wealthiest. Los Angeles Clippers owner, Steve Ballmer, checks in at 26th with his net worth at $23.5 billion. Seattle Seahawks and Portland Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen, checks in at No. 40 on the list. Both of the aforementioned billionaires built their wealth through Microsoft.

Along with his work at Nike, Knight has also been heavily involved with the University of Oregon athletics program. That includes a $100 million gift in 2007 to “support all athletic programs and allow the university to achieve excellence in its competitive sports.”
